We had a quiet night at Leroy Cove, but deemed it not such a great place for the NW half-gale predicted tonight, so we resolved to move to either McBean Harbour or, if it is full, Logan Bay on Clapperton Island. The “Well-Favored Passage” said it was possible for an adventurous sailor to take the short cut from Leroy Cove to McBean Harbour through the inside passage south of Anchor Island, thus saving us a 6 mile trip west out through Oak Bay and then east to McBean. So, with the Admiral on bow watch we set off. Except for a couple of charted and marked (by locals with milk jugs) rocks right at the start of the passage, the 2.3 mile trip to McBean was uneventful and we anchored at the NW corner of McBean Harbour at 10:45, with a good view of Mount McBean, about 2 miles to the north. After lunch, I was about to take the dinghy up to explore Dead End Bay to the NW of us as a possible storm anchorage, when another sail boat came out of the narrow entry. They advised that it was plenty deep for us, so we upped anchor and motored another mile and a half to the far NW corner of Dead End Bay, where we anchored in 7 feet of water at 14:45. There are two beaver lodges adjacent to us, a number of Canadian geese and at least one Grey Heron, but no eagles. We settled in for the night.

As predicted, the wind shifted around to the NW during the early hours, so we got to listen to the chain slowly being dragged around and stretched out to the SE for the rest of the night. But at least there is no fetch here, so we had no wave action at all. We finally got out of bed just before 09:00 to a cold (57F), windy (NW 15 - 20), overcast morning. The morning forecast is for strong wind warnings and NW 15 - 25 until late afternoon, so we just sat tight and read and planned ahead.
