Having retired in 2012, my wife and I departed Houston, TX in February 2013, planning to take our time completing the American Great Loop, with no particular time-line. We bought the boat, a 2006 Beneteau 423 sailboat in late 2011. We owned a smaller sailboat years ago and have 40 or 50 weeks cumulative experience chartering sailboats in the Pacific NW and the Mediterranean Sea.

Bermuda to the Azores - 2021

April-June 2021  •  54 days

I joined S/V "Saddha", owned and captained by Paul Grondahl, as crew on a passage across the Atlantic Ocean from St. Georges, Bermuda to Horta, Azores, Portugal. The trip started in Houston, with a flight to Bermuda on 29 April and ended in Horta, Azores, where we arrived on 13 May, 2021. We sailed out of St. Georges at noon on 2 May and anchored in Horta Harbour at 21:00 local time on 13 May, having covered 1876 N-m at an average speed of 7.7 kn. I later flew to Lisbon and then on to Houston via Amsterdam.
