Having retired in 2012, my wife and I departed Houston, TX in February 2013, planning to take our time completing the American Great Loop, with no particular time-line. We bought the boat, a 2006 Beneteau 423 sailboat in late 2011. We owned a smaller sailboat years ago and have 40 or 50 weeks cumulative experience chartering sailboats in the Pacific NW and the Mediterranean Sea.
Down East Circle Loop - 2015
Over the winter, we decided to extend our American Great Loop adventure to include the Down East Circle Loop. Starting from our winter storage yard in Jamestown, RI, we ran down Long Island Sound, up the Hudson, through the Erie Canal to Lake Ontario, then down the St. Lawrence River/Seaway to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, passing Prince Edwards Island and Cape Breton Island. From there, it was down the "iron" coast of Nova Scotia, across the Bay of Fundy and back into Maine, where we parked the boat for the winter at a boatyard in Rockland, ME.
