We were up before dawn again to catch the last half of the flood tide from Flagg Cove across the Grand Manan strait to East Quoddy Head and then up to Eastport. We got away from the dock at 06:45 and headed out in the pre-dawn chill; it is definitely getting cooler - 46F as we got out of bed. Sunrise was gorgeous. We took a slight detour off the rhumb line into Whale Cove, trying to see Hole in the Wall, but never did see it in the gloom. So, we settled on the course -329 deg T - to East Quoddy Head at the north end of Campobello Island, where apparently FDR’s family maintained a summer cottage. As we turned SW into Head Harbour Passage, it became obvious that we had done well to catch the flood, as the current was running at 3 - 4 kn with us (i.e., we would have been fighting that much, or more, ebb current had we waited a couple of hours). At the international border, we doused the Canadian courtesy flag with all appropriate ceremony and were shortly tied up at the Eastport town dock at 09:45, where we were met by Officer Jamieson of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency to clear passport control and customs. We cleared in without issue and, after an early lunch, did a quick run to the grocery store, followed by an afternoon spent at the local library, using their WiFi to catch up on e-mails and work on my spreadsheet for winter storage selection. Back to the boat for happy hour and dinner aboard. The assistant harbor master paid us a visit to collect the (somewhat expensive, considering there is no water or power) $2.00/ft/night dockage fee.
