Cold and overcast at dawn, but we got up anyway to get ready to take on the Waterford Flight: 5 locks (1 right after the other), covering a distance of 1.5 miles horizontally and lifting the boat 169 feet over the Hudson Escarpment and around the Coho Falls on the Mohawk River. After we cleared the 5 locks, we entered the Mohawk River and moved another 11 miles or so up the river, through one more lock, and stopped for the night at the Schenectady Yacht Club. The YC is built on top of part of the original Erie Canal; in fact, the club’s haul out facility is located on and uses old Lock 20. Right next to the dock are some of the foundations of the aqueduct where the Erie Canal used to cross the Mohawk River.
