D-Day, 71 years ago today, lest we forget. We had a restful night, with a bit of rain, but the dawn was cool and dry, with a bit of overcast. About 09:30, we tossed off the dock lines, and, in company with “Significant Other”, made a gentle passage another 21 miles, passing Fonda (family home of Henry Fonda) and through 3 more locks to Canajoharie, the former home of the Beechnut Packing Company. Another Mohawk Valley town, dying on it’s feet, but with a beautiful museum (home to a number of Homer Winslow originals, among others), financed by the founder of Beechnut, Bartlett Arkell: a very wealthy business man, who felt a connection and obligation to his employees and the town that housed them all. Where are the leaders of industry with a conscience the likes of Arkell now? According to fellow bar patrons, about 52% of the county population is on welfare; not a lot of industry around here and very few jobs available. Back to the boat for “‘appy ‘our”; dinner aboard. The weather is just absolutely gorgeous; high temp of 72 F, clear, light wind (it is 91 F back home in Houston now, poor devils). We will move on to Ilion tomorrow.
