Up again early, we did a final purge of boat trash and I changed the raw water impeller on the main engine. Unfortunately, the old one had lost a couple of teeth, so I had to back flush the cooling system to get the bits out of the heat exchanger; this was accomplished with relative ease by disconnecting the hose on the upstream side of the anti-syphon U-bend and connected a water hose to it; the bits of rubber immediately flushed back into a bucket I had placed below the impeller chamber. I contacted Fisheries Supply in Seattle and ordered a replacement heating element for the hot water heater. Then, we took the car over to the Cap Sante U-Haul, where it will be stored for the summer and walked back to the boat. We got away from the dock about noon and, after stopping to pump-out the forward holding tank and fill up the gerry can with diesel, we were on our way at long last. We motored east out of the marina for about a mile and a half, then turned south into the Swinomish Channel, which is a natural water course separating Fidalgo Island from the mainland, that has long-since been widened and deepened to allow big boats through. La Conner is about 2/3 of the way through the cut and this is where we stopped for the night. This is a beautiful little tourist town with lots of shops, bars and restaurants. After loading up on books at the lovely Seaport Book store, we sampled some of the local brew at La Conner Brewery - the NW IPA was excellent. Later, on the recommendation of the owner of Seaport Books, we had dinner at Anelias and listened to a bit of live music from “Released from Quiet”, with Chris and Mary.
