It was cold this morning, so we were slow getting up, but at least the sun was shining and the solarium was warm when we did. After a lazy breakfast, we dropped the mooring lines and sailed away, without starting the engine, just after 10:00. The wind was WSW 10 - 15 and we had a lovely sail, close-hauled nearly all the way, to Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island, where we were tied up in the marina at 12:30. John and Laurie, on “Massilia”, checked in about 13:30 and we had a joyous reunion. After a walk around town, we had happy hour on the boat and then went up to Coho for a wonderful late dinner. The wind was gusting up to 25+ kn all afternoon, but died down throughout the night.

It was warmer this morning that yesterday, but still fresh; wind was down dramatically from yesterday. We spent the morning reading the paper and helping John and Laurie select new material for their new salon cushions, then walked up and had a late lunch at the San Juan Brewery. After lunch, J & L walked back to deliberate further on the material color/pattern, so the Admiral and I walked over to the San Juan Island Museum of Art, which has an excellent artistic display and message about the current and accelerating threats to the health of the Puget Sound area ecology. In particular, salmon stocks are continuing to fall and the resident orca pod is at severe risk and has been placed on the endangered list; 70% of pregnancies over the last 15 years or so have been unsuccessful and this is surely not sustainable. The problems, in addition to a dwindling food stock, include industrial and domestic pollution and ship noise from the increasing amount of international and coastal shipping. We had dinner on board with J & L.
