We slept in past our internal alarm clocks, set at 08:00, but did drag out of bed about 08:30. The anchor was aweigh by 09:30, we left the bay, with less drama than entering, and headed north toward Krestof Island. We passed a few miles west of Sitka and took a slightly different route up through the channels. We had originally thought to stop in Whitestone Cove, but it did not appeal, so we carried on for another 15 miles or so to Kalinin Bay, which turned out to be a real gem. Somewhere along the way, we saw mama sea otter and her cub. As we were anchoring behind a couple of stink-potters, we saw two female grizzlies, with 3 and 2, respectively, cubs, grazing on separate beaches. They carried on for several hours. Later on a couple of deer came down to the same beach, after the bears left. We also watched a couple of eagles tending a nest with one or two young ones in it. Chatting with some of our fellow yachties, we found out a party of 4 ladies just got back from the hike to/from the beach at Sea Lion Cove; they were gone about 5 hours, but the trail was good. During the course of the evening, 6 fishing boats also came in and anchored in the bay. As I watched them coming in, I thought, “these guys come to THIS place after a long day of working for themselves”; way better than my commute for 35 odd years.
