The weather was cold and rainy on this Mardi Gras morning, so we decided to pass on a visit to Avery Island and headed on out to the ICW. Fog was a bit of a problem a few times, but we managed the 25 mile trip to Charenton Canal without too much delay or challenge, although it was cold and miserable all day long. We got anchored on the edge of the canal with a line ashore to stop us swinging, thinking we would have a quiet night; wrong. About 22:30, we were awakened by the sound of a barge (distinctive swishing sound) and tug passing very close by (about 30 feet). After leaping out of bed to make sure we were alright (as if we could have done anything about it), we settled back in, only to be awakened about once an hour until 02:30 next morning. By then, I was so wired, it was difficult to get back to sleep.
