No Aurora again last night, even though it was crystal clear. Mosquitos woke me at 5:30, and by the time I had hunted them down and eliminated the threat, I was a long time getting back to sleep. We finally got moving just before 08:00 and were sitting in the cockpit enjoying breakfast when “Islandia” upped anchor and took off. We followed along about 45 minutes behind them. It was a gorgeous, clear day, but the wind was in the SW (i.e., open to all of Lake Huron), so we were glad to get our open-lake portion out of the way before the waves built up. Today’s run was basically out Bad River Channel, then a long end-around past a bunch of offshore rocks and reefs, before turning up into Beaverstone Bay and into Collins Inlet. There is one really shallow bit at the north end of Beaverstone (we showed 6.2 ft on the echo-sounder), but fortunately, this year the lake is higher than normal by about 1 meter, so we were able to get through with no problem. We passed Mill Lake, which has a number of good anchorages and pressed on to Turning (or Keyhole, depending on which chart or guide-book one refers to) Island and anchored 100 m from “Islandia” at 12:50. After lunch, I rigged up the sail on “Swallow” and had a lovely sail around the anchorage in blustery conditions. Bob went for a quick spin, but decided it was a little to tender for him to learn on in these conditions, so he was back after a couple of minutes.
