Another long day on the road: 541 miles from Boise to Astoria, OR. We arrived in Astoria about 15:30. After checking in at the Franklin Street Station B&B, we went for a nice walk around town, finishing up with happy hour and dinner at the Silver Salmon Grille: excellent meal.

Breakfast was not served until 08:30, so we lazed in bed a while (at least by our recent standards). After Becky’s excellent breakfast, we hopped in the car and headed over to have a look at the infamous Columbia River bar from Fort Stevens. I looked a bit rough on the bar, but not as impressive as we were hoping for, although we could not get very close. Then, it was over to the Lewis and Clark Fort Clatsop Museum, where we spent a couple of hours. Back into Astoria for a lite lunch at the Astoria Coffeehouse, followed by the afternoon at the Columbia River Maritime Museum - what an excellent museum it was. They finally had to chuck us out at closing time, whereupon we went up to the Astoria Column, which is a 120’ high tower at the top of the hill behind town, affording excellent views of the Columbia River, Youngs River and the surrounding countryside. A young gentleman who climbed the tower at the same time amused us by launching 4 balsa wood gliders from the top of the tower. We finished up with happy hour and an excellent dinner at Carruthers Restaurant.
