It rained half the night and was still sprinkling when we got up. The only trouble with this mooring field is that about every 30 minutes, a wake from one of the Washington State Ferries rolls in and rolls us around; between the light wind and an apparent back-eddy current, we seem to be precisely broadside to every wake. We finally got going about 10:30, to make the short run over to Cypress Head, a Department of Natural Resources reserve, with free mooring balls. Although we have been past several times, I don’t believe we have ever previously set foot on Cypress Island. We were tied up at a mooring ball by noon and after lunch, when the rain finally stopped and it cleared up a bit, we went for a long walk up to the “air-field”, at the highest elevation of Cypress Island. Why there is an air-field there, unused for some years now, is unclear. Anyway, it was a good 4 mile walk with 950 ft of elevation climb; sore legs all round tonight. Back for showers on the transom, happy hour and dinner aboard. Another fine day; it finally feels like we are on a proper cruising vacation again.
