The weather is fine this morning. We waited for the flood tide to set in and dropped the mooring ball about 11:45 to head over toward Sucia I, with a close look in at Matia I along the way. The flood tide helped along the way and we even motor-sailed a bit in light southerly winds. We turned in to look at Rolfe Cove on the east end of Matia I, and, as there was a mooring ball available, we decided to stop here; we have never stopped here before, even though we have been past it many times on the way to Sucia I. We were all tied up by 13:45 and immediately went ashore for a walk around the island, all of which is a state park and nature preserve. A baby seal is laying on the beach near where we landed; we are afraid he has been abandoned or his mother has been killed, although there are a couple of seals roaming around the cove. This is a beautiful, quiet little cove, with only ourselves and two other boats (one at the other mooring buoy and one more at the park dock), whereas, Sucia has at least 20 boats in Echo Bay, and they are still coming in as folks head over from Bellingham for the weekend. I believe the “season” has commenced with the onset of good weather and the holiday weekend (4th of July) approaching. We have reservations in Ganges for Canada Day and at Van Isle Marina in Sidney for the 4 days we will be going over to Vancouver to visit John and Laurie, attend Bard on the Beach and meet Jim and Robin. Back to the boat for a quiet afternoon of reading, prior to happy hour and dinner aboard.
