We awoke to a lovely morning, with high, broken clouds. After breakfast, I walked over to Peetz and then back to Trotac to get the minimum essential fishing gear for my salmon fishing rig, along with bait for the prawn trap. Terri went with Laurie to the knit shop. I had a nice lunch at the Bard and Baker Pub, then came back to the boat and changed the primary fuel filter, apparently without spilling diesel fuel all over the place; that took about 1.5 hours. Then I got on the bus to get the number 3 propane tank refilled, only to find out when I got there that it had expired in April of this year, so I will have to get it re-certified over the winter (and we will have to get by on 2 propane tanks for the rest of the summer - should be no big deal). After I got back, John flew back in from Vancouver and Gordon and Sarah (Sally), Laurie’s friends, and Annette, joined us for happy hour, then we went for a late dinner at Steamboat Grill. Service was slow, so we did not get out of there until well past 22:00.

We were up before 08:00 and had a leisurely breakfast, but did not get going until well after 10:00. Laurie had to run up to The Bay to buy John a new pillow and their computer broke down, so it took her a while to pay. We were out of Victoria by about 11:15 and immediately had the sails up in a W12 breeze. After a couple of tacks, we sailed right through Race Passage and then beat up the Strait of Juan de Fuca in a W12-15 knot breeze. We finally made it into Sooke Harbour at 15:15; after checking with all the commercial marinas, only to find they were full, we snagged a place at the government dock. Massilia came in and rafted up beside us about 15 minutes later. Within a few minutes, we hiked up into town to visit the Shearingham Distillery and sample their kelp-infused gin; we ended up buying a couple of bottles. Then, we walked on into town, grabbed a quick bite to eat at the Sooke Brewing Company, did a quick grocery shop, then came back to the boat for coffee and tea. Early to bed to be ready for the 36 mile run to Port Renfrew tomorrow.
