The front finally arrived during the night; the wind piped up and we had a brief sprinkle, but otherwise, no big deal - other than the temperature finally dropped down into the 60’s. I worked on the cockscombing on the starboard handrail for a while, then we got away from the dock at 11:30. Before we left the marina, we pumped out the holding tanks and filled up with diesel. Then, it was out into the stream and wind to move north a ways. We passed the Indian Point Nuclear Power Station to starboard, under the Bear Mountain Bridge, then West Point Military Academy on the port side, and finally Pollepel Island and Branneman’s Castle before heading into Riverfront Marina at Newburgh, NY, tying up before 15:30. The wind was smack on the nose so we motored all the way; quite a change from last year’s run up the Hudson - we did this stretch with the spinnaker up and then were hit by a huge lightning storm at our anchorage a couple of miles south of Newburgh. They put us on the face-dock at the marina, so there was a lot of wake action, but it was OK. The marina has a big algae growth on the upstream side of the docks, and a revolting, carrot-like tuber seams to be growing in the algae - its all smells pretty bad during the walk to the shore. I worked a bit more on the starboard cockscombing before happy hour, after which we went into town to sample the waterfront restaurants. We finally settled on Mykonos for a nice Greek meal, although the portions were HUGE. We got back to the boat about 20:30. The music at Billy Joe’s Rib Shack was thumping, but we did not feel like dancing to the hip-hop beat. Unfortunately, the music kept going until 02:00, but, with the help of the air-conditioner and ear-plugs, we slept through most of it.
