There was nothing to wake us up this morning, so we did not awake until 08:00. The very unseasonable northeast winds persist, so it is still cool and cloudy, although the rain seems to have moved on for the time being. After breakfast, we moved over to the FYC dock and pumped out the holding tanks. While we were in the midst of this process, Mike (“Sea Sharp”) from the FYC showed up and we had a nice long chat with him. We finally got away from the dock at about 10:30 and headed SW out of Grand Lake, back down Heustis Creek, into the Saint John River for a couple of miles down to Penrey Point, where we turned up into Colwells Creek, passing Killaboy Island close to starboard on the way, listening to “Memory Man” most of the way. We got up into the creek and anchored fore and aft in 12 ft of water, using the new stern tape and the aluminum Fortress anchor as our kedge; the stern tape was very easy to deploy. After we got settled in, we unlimbered “Swallow” and went for a long row about 2 miles up the creek into Foshay Lake; very bucolic, but we did not see as much wildlife as we were hoping for. We rowed back down the creek, past the boat to the nearby public landing and went ashore for a short walk up the road; again, not much to see, as we are out in the boonies here, but we could see Washedemoak Lake (tomorrow’s destination) across a farm. Then, after a long chat with a couple of fishermen on Colwells Wharf, we made it back to the boat in time for happy hour. Dinner aboard (lamb chops and veggies). Ernest on board “Glooskap”, whom we had met at RKYC, pulled in and anchored 100 m upstream from us about 20:30. It calmed down about dark and we sat out listening to the bull-frogs and night-birds until after 22:00; the mosquitos were not too bad. It was unfortunate that it is still cloudy, so we could see nary a star.
